Regular cleanings and exams are one of the most effective ways to protect your teeth. Even with excellent brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar that only a professional can remove. At Fair Oaks Village Dental, our hygiene visits combine a careful, comfortable cleaning with a comprehensive evaluation by Dr. Kyle Chaw.
Most patients benefit from a cleaning and exam every six months. These visits give us the chance to spot small issues such as early decay, gum inflammation, or a cracked filling while they are still small and simple to treat.
What happens during a cleaning and exam
Your visit begins with a gentle, thorough cleaning by our hygiene team. We remove plaque and tartar, polish the teeth, and review your brushing and flossing technique so you can keep your results between visits.
Dr. Chaw then performs a comprehensive exam. He checks each tooth and existing restoration, evaluates your gums, screens for oral cancer, and reviews any digital X-rays needed to see between and beneath the teeth. If he finds anything, he will explain it clearly and walk you through every option before you decide on treatment.
- Plaque and tartar removal (scaling)
- Tooth polishing and stain removal
- Gum health evaluation
- Oral cancer screening
- Digital X-rays as needed
- Personalized home care recommendations
How often should you come in?
Six-month intervals work well for most people, but the right schedule depends on your individual risk. Patients with a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or certain medical conditions may benefit from more frequent visits. We will recommend a schedule that fits your mouth, not a one-size-fits-all rule.
